Undergraduate research mini story: Harmeen Dhaliwal

Project: Designing AI Solutions for Neurodiverse Students in Education | Supervisor: Houston Peschl, Haskayne School of Business.

As a neurodivergent student, I've always struggled with the traditional academic systems, mainly knowing how to start things. When ChatGPT came out in 2022, I began using it to create plans for my assignments, like breaking down eleven-page case studies into digestible steps, and for the first time, I felt like I had some control over my academics.

Last year, I took an entrepreneurship class where my supervisor actually taught us how to use AI in a credible way, and by the end of the semester, I'd noticed something troubling: while everyone talks about what teachers, parents, and institutions think about AI, nobody was listening to student voices, especially around how AI can help as a study aid. Shouldn't we hear what they think? I proposed this as a research topic and my supervisor was fully on board. We designed the project to be fundamentally student-centred, and my interviews revealed something crucial: neurodivergent students aren't being lazy or dishonest, they're adapting because educational supports haven't evolved to meet their needs. Too many neurodivergent students are being left behind, and their only choice is to innovate their own solutions or risk dropping out. What shocked me most during my interviews was confronting my own bias鈥擨 expected students to confess to using AI for cheating, but that didn鈥檛 really happen.

Instead, I discovered students using these tools in incredibly creative ways, not looking for shortcuts but bridging gaps that traditional support systems had left unfilled. It was inspiring to see how technology can be incredibly inclusive when used thoughtfully for real issues.
