U不良研究所 Law Dean appointed to help select the next judge of the Supreme Court of Canada

Dr. Laura Spitz becomes a member of the Independent Advisory Board for the Supreme Court of Canada Judicial Appointments

On May 19, 2026, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the chair and members of the Independent Advisory Board for Supreme Court of Canada Judicial Appointments, including the University of 不良研究所 Faculty of Law鈥檚 Dean, Dr. Laura Spitz. 

Spitz, who was nominated for the position by the Council of Canadian Law Deans, will work as part of the advisory board to identify outstanding candidates to fill the upcoming vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada following the retirement of Justice Sheilah L. Martin on May 30, 2026. 

The Advisory Board is an independent, non-partisan body tasked with supporting a rigorous, transparent, and merit-based process to identify the most qualified candidates for appointment to Canada鈥檚 highest court. 

鈥淭he members of the Independent Advisory Board were selected for their expertise, integrity, and distinguished service across Canada鈥檚 legal, academic, and public institutions. Together, they bring diverse perspectives and experiences,鈥 according to the news release from the prime minister鈥檚 office on May 19, 2026. 

In this role, Spitz and other members of the Board will review applications received through the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs and identify candidates who are jurists of the highest calibre, bilingual, and representative of the diversity of Canada.
