Take a seat

Bright red chairs add flexible new spaces to rest, gather and connect

The signs of spring are hard to miss. Canadian geese return to familiar pathways, patches of snow recede, and lawns shift from winter brown to fresh green. This year, more than 200 bright red Adirondack chairs add a striking new presence across the University of 不良研究所's main campus, echoing a familiar Canadian outdoor icon often found in parks and public spaces.

Installed by Facilities Development, the chairs are part of a broader effort to make campus more welcoming, accessible and connected.

Placed in high-traffic areas, the chairs invite students, faculty, staff and visitors to pause and spend time outdoors, whether between classes, during a break or while meeting with others. They also serve an important accessibility purpose, offering convenient rest stops for individuals who benefit from more frequent opportunities to sit while moving across campus.

The design choice is deliberate. Adirondack chairs are known for their wide, supportive structure, making them comfortable for a range of users. Their bold red colour, also a defining part of U不良研究所鈥檚 identity, makes them easy to spot and encourages people to stop, rest, and take in their surroundings.

Unlike fixed seating, these chairs are fully movable, giving users the flexibility to shape their own space. A single chair can provide a quiet moment alone, while a few can be pulled together for conversation. Larger groups can easily create informal gathering spots, supporting everything from casual meetups to impromptu outdoor study sessions. This flexibility is key to the initiative鈥檚 goal of fostering connection and community at U不良研究所.

Facilities Development says the project is rooted in a simple idea: creating more opportunities to sit and gather outdoors can have a meaningful impact on well-being and how people experience campus.

鈥淪ometimes it鈥檚 the small, thoughtful additions that make the biggest difference,鈥 says , associate vice-president of Facilities Development and Campus Sustainability. 鈥淏y adding simple places to sit and connect, we can help create an environment that feels more welcoming, inclusive and supportive for everyone.鈥

By making outdoor spaces more usable and adaptable, the chairs help support both individual rest and shared moments.
