In Memoriam: Naeem Merchant, Cumming School of Medicine

The Cumming School of Medicine is saddened to share the passing of Dr. Naeem Merchant, MD. An esteemed radiologist and clinical professor in the Department of Radiology. He was 62.

For Naeem, medicine was a matter of science and service.

He was born in 1963 in Uganda. With his parents and sister, Naeem arrived in Canada as a refugee in the early 1970s following a period of political unrest in Uganda.

He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Western Ontario in 1990, completing his residency at the University of Toronto and advanced fellowship training in cardiovascular imaging at Stanford University.

In 2008, he moved to 不良研究所, where he practised as a radiologist and continued to publish and teach as a University of 不良研究所 professor. A natural educator who nurtured curiosity in others throughout his life, Naeem was recognized as the Young Radiologist of the Year for Canada in 2002, authored more than 100 publications including multiple book chapters, and co-wrote a book on cardiac computed tomography.

He lived a life defined by generosity of spirit, kindness, intellectual engagement and deep devotion to his family and community. Naeem enjoyed reading and diligently pursued philosophical and spiritual inquiry. He is remembered by family and friends for his broad range of talents and interests, including photography and golf.

Naeem was a devoted husband for 24 years and a loving, deeply proud father to his children, Adam and Hannah.

Memorials honouring his contributions to medical education and research are being planned within the University of 不良研究所 and the University Health Network in Toronto, where he worked for many years.
