2026 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholar

Graduate Student Spotlight
Makda

Makda Habtegergesa, one of our doctoral student in the Department of Political Science, has been named a 2026 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholar!

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship is a highly competitive doctoral award that supports outstanding PhD students working on pressing social and political issues. The scholarship provides funding for up to three years, along with support for research, travel, leadership training, mentorship, and professional development. The program is designed to help doctoral researchers connect academic work to public engagement and policy impact.

Makda鈥檚 doctoral research examines how racially minoritized women in Canada access, navigate, and reshape political representation across the stages of candidacy, parliamentary participation, and policy articulation. Her project contributes to scholarship on political representation by using an intersectional lens to understand how race and gender interact to shape distinct political experiences in Canadian federal politics.

Makda also extends her thanks to her supervisor, Dr. Susan Franceschet, for her support in preparing the application.
